Good drainage is essential - hyacinths rot if they sit in water. Put the pot in a cool, dark place (like a shed, garage, cellar, or bottom of the fridge at 5-9 C for 8-10 weeks). Check occasionally to make sure the compost stays slightly damp (this imitates winter and helps root develop). When shoots are about 5 cm tall, bring the pot indoor to a bright cool windowsill. Avoid direct heat from radiators or strong sun. After a week or so, the flower spikes will start to grow. Once buds show colour, you can move them to a warmer room to encourage blooming.

These Hyacinth bulbs have been prepared - that means that they have been chilled to make them flower early indoors. Use a pot, bowl, or bulb glass (a special vase for hyacinths). Make sure it has good drainage, unless you’re using bulb fibre ( special compost substitute). Fill your pot two-thirds full with moist bulb fibre or peat-free compost. Place the bulbs close together but not touching each other or the sides of the pot. The tips should just peek above the surface (about 1 cm showing) Fill around them gently and firm the compost. Water so the compost is slightly moist, not soggy.
