Air plants are the most amazing house plants. Why? Because they don't need to be planted in soil or compost! There are several hundred different types of Tillandsia, which are a type of bromeliad. These obtain all the water and nutrients they require through their specialised foliage. In the wild (Mexico, Central and South America), their roots attach to rocks, trees and shrubs in order that they can dangle. They then absorb all they need from the environment.
All they need, within a home or office environment, is a free-flowing circulation of air; warmth and protection from frost; moisture (this can be provided by misting with rainwater or regular dunking). They also need to be kept out of direct sunlight, bearing in mind these are forest-dwellers.
Tillandsias can be housed within a terrarium or they can dangle in the indoor air. They can also be attached to driftwood, to artwork or to a shelf. There's no end of possibilities! How amazing.
