Amelanchier alnifolia 'Northline' is a saskatoon which is a fruit that is sometimes called 'the new blueberry'. The berries look and taste rather like a sweet blueberry, with the added bonus of marzipan-flavoured seeds. Some people say that the fruit also tastes like a cherry, or maybe an almond. It can be used in jams, desserts and smoothies. 

  • Plant in a sheltered site, in full sun.
  • This shrubs produces a profusion of white blossom during spring.
  • Leaves turn orange and red in autumn.
  • Might need protection from cold during winter.
  • If planting several bushes, allow 3m between each one. They should reach a mature height of about 2m-3m or so in the UK.
  • Water regularly but don't allow this shrub to sit in boggy or waterlogged ground.
  • No pruning required for the first few years. After that, some of the older branches can be pruned away each spring.
  • Berry production is best on the younger shoots.
  • The variety 'Northline' is a highly popular variety because the fruit has a wonderful deep flavour and the yields are high, even from young plants.
  • The berries can be eaten fresh or cooked within cakes, pies, crumbles and smoothies. 
  • Self-fertile.
