Roses are woody perennials or shrubs and they come in many different forms including climbing, shrub or bush, miniature, trailing and standard. Some Roses are also used as ground cover. They are well known for their summer rose flowers which are often highly fragrant. Generally clothed in protective prickles, roses are a traditional favourite for the English garden. They require pruning either once or twice per year, depending on the form, and benefit from mulching in spring and autumn. There is a huge variety of cultivars and colours, some more disease-resistant than others.
Roses make wonderful gifts and the names of some of the 'special occasion' varieties make them highly appropriate.
