Details

If you are looking for a house plant that is highly unusual, this might be it!  Vanilla planifolia is the source of vanilla, one of the most popular flavours in the world. In fact, weight for weight, vanilla is one of the most valuable spice crops. It  belongs to one of the oldest and largest groups of flowering plants - orchids.

  • The vanilla orchid, Vanilla planifolia, is found naturally in tropical forests of Central America.
  • The only member of the orchid family to produce an agriculturally valuable crop.
  • This plant is a climber and it can reach heights of up to 30m in the wild!
  • It would naturally be pollinated by the Melipona bee.
  • As a crop, the yellow-green flowers on this vine are pollinated by hand. This makes it a highly labour-intensive crop.
  • The vine is folded down to a height that can be harvested.
  • After pollination, pendulous vanilla fruit pods gradually develop.
  • After several months, the almost ripe fruits are harvested, dried and cured.
  • The pods may be used whole, or split and the tiny seeds scraped out, to infuse cream and custard-based sauces.
  • Likes warm temperatures, around 30 C during daytime and around 10C at night.
  • Likes high humidity.
  • Bathrooms often provide the right sort of environment, provided the air is circulating.
  • Keep damp but always watch out for root rot.
  • Fertilise regularly during the growing season.
  • Sold in a 12cm pot with trellis.
