This herbaceous perennial is really useful for brightening up dark corners and it will be happy in partial shade, in moist, rich soil. The bright, light evergreen leaves of Tradescantia 'Blue and Gold' provide a great contrast for the deep blue flowers which appear in mid summer and the plant will continue to bloom if old flowers are removed. Tradescantia forms a compact mound reaching approximately 30cm high and if it looks tired in mid summer it will respond well to pruning back to around 20cm tall.
Also known as Spiderwort and 'Sweet Kate', it looks great in a damp site and can even tolerate pond-side settings. The flowers attract butterflies too. What's not to like?
