Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant, is a highly desirable and reliable house plant that is easy to care for. Just give it medium light levels and moderate amounts of water and it will gradually grow, being restrained only by the size of its pot. As it grows, the leaves become larger and mature leaves can be huge. Foliage on a young plant is 'un-split'. These plants help filter the air within a home or office. They take out toxins and give out oxygen. Great health-giving properties, and beautiful too!

This Swiss cheese plant stands approximately 100cm tall and has extra large leaves. The plant is actually a type of vine of the genus Monstera. It originates from Central America.It is actually, therefore, a climbing plant which produces long brown aerial roots which it uses to hold onto trees. It is these that it uses to climb against.

  • The stem of this house plant is comparatively weak as it uses the supporting tree as its strength.
  • When it is young, Monstera does not have cut, divided leaves. These develop as the plant matures.
  • This house plant requires moderate levels of light. Keep out of direct sunlight.
  • It is also known as Mexican Breadfuirt and Window Leaf.
  • It likes a humid atmosphere and although it can cope with dry air, the leaves will be larger and more impressive if humidity is high.
  • Avoid draughts.
  • Feed about twice per month during the growing season.
  • Water about once per week but do not allow this plant to stand in water for too long.
  • The leaves will look their best if wiped over with tepid water occasionally in order to remove dust.
  • Currenty growing in a 24cm diameter pot.
  • The height of the plant, including the pot, is currently around 100cm.
