Description: An upright, deciduous shrub or small tree with burgundy-black, pinnate leaves. Sweet, lemon-scented blooms are carried in dense panicles in early summer, followed by glossy black elderberries that are loved by birds.

Sambucus Growing Tips: Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils, also thrives on extremely chalky sites. Tolerates shade, but colours best in sun. Fruit and flowers may be used for flavouring, wine and cooking. Height and Spread (after 10 years): 3m x 2m
