Shrubs

Shrubs

Shrubs are woody plants that can sometimes look like small trees. They frequently have multiple stems rather than a single trunk but the definition is not fixed. Shrubs can be described as ‘bushes’ and would normally be under about four metres tall, with stems that are no larger in diameter than about 7cm. There is a huge variety of shrubs, some grown for flowers, scent and fruit, others grown for their excellent screening capabilities; their foliage colour; shape and form. Shrubs can be evergreen or deciduous and they have a great role to play in the garden including providing habitats and food for wildlife.

No garden is maintenance free, but using shrubs gives year-round structure and interest, and many can be left to do their 'own thing', providing there is enough space in which to do so.
