Palms & Exotic Plants

Palms make wonderful indoor plants because they have a great architectural shape and are generally easy to care for. Many different palms will cope admirably with relatively dry air and low light levels. But try to keep your palm away from direct sources of heat and give it as much light as you can. Avoid direct sunshine through glass however, as this can burn the leaf fronds.

Some palms e.g. Howea (Kentia Palm) is tolerant of lower temperatures and lower light levels and this species is very popular as an office plant as well as a house plant.

The sago palm likes light and high humidity levels. Growing up to about 2ft tall indoors this species is a slow grower and it is toxic to pets.

Always carry out your own research about palms suitable for your particular environment.

Most palms like some humidity in the air and they do well in bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms. They are not fussy about soil but don't like to be over-watered.

Handy tip: give the foliage a wash using tepid water from time to time. It will not only look nice but will allow your plant to make the most of its environment.
