Seeds are a great, inexpensive way to grow plants. What’s more, there’s tremendous satisfaction to be gained from both growing food and growing for embellishing the garden. A seed is basically an embryonic plant protected by a coat. Inside there’s some stored food which is designed to be just enough to get the seedling established until it can produce its own food supplies through photosynthesis. Not all plants produce seed. Some reproduce by spores or vegetatively. The three main types of seed are grasses which are monocotyledons with just one seed leaf; legumes which are dicotyledons with two seed leaves and oilseeds which are also dicotyledons. The latter group have higher levels of oil and include varieties such as sunflower and soy beans. Want to create a flower garden without spending too much money? Use seeds!
