Alpines are plants that typically come from alpine regions – i.e. mountainous areas. These specialised growers have adapted to the environment by keeping low to the ground, being slow-growing and long-lived. They often have small or downy-covered leaves to help them withstand cold temperatures. Alpines can cope with snow and lots of water but they ideally need stony, well-drained soil which is free-draining. They are ideally suited to rock and gravel gardens within a domestic setting. Many of them are drought-tolerant too.
