Phoenix canariensis is a palm tree that is native to the Canary Island and is often called the Canary Island date palm. It is a tree-like palm with stiff, arching fronds which have pinnate leaves. This plant can grow up to 15m tall in its native lands where it can also produce drooping clusters of creamy yellow flowers in summer, followed by fruits in autumn.

  • This palm is not hardy here in the UK, but can withstand temperatures down to minus six degrees.
  • In the UK it can be protected with fleece in winter but needs well draining soil and a sheltered site.
  • Makes an ideal conservatory plant, but will need room to spread outwards.
  • Take care when tidying older leaves as there are spines at the base which can be very sharp.
  • Likes high light levels.
  • Water regularly but never allow the plant to sit in water.
  • Sold in a 19cm pot.
  • The palm is currently at a height of 70-80cm approx, this includes the pot.
