The banana palm, Musa ensete 'Maurelii Red' is also known as Ensete 'Maurelii' , the red Abyssinian banana. These can be treated as house plants here in the UK, but are also at home in a tropical plant setting outdoors. They will require winter protection unless planted in a really sunny and sheltered position. The 'Maurelli Red' variety has dark red colouration under its leaves that blend to a green upper leaf, often with red streaks. Stems are a vibrant orange red. Leaves are large and wide, up to 1.5m long. Banana plants are quite tolerant of cold weather, remaining green until first frost.. They can be wrapped and left outdoors with a good mulch to keep the soil warm, or can be brought indoors. Plant in full sun in a light soil mix containing bark, perlite and peat moss. Soil should be kept damp while the plant is still young. Once leaves start to unfurl, provide lots of water to the soil - banana plants like damp feet. Try mulching to retain as much moisture as possible in the soil. Bring indoors to over-winter when night temps drop below 40F. Plants grow to around 2m high, depending on light and growing conditions.
