Lemon Verbena, Aloysia citrodora. This is a lovely herb which has wonderfully aromatic foliage. It has a sweet lemon flavour that can be used in the kitchen. Make it into a tea or dessert or use it for seasoning meat.

  • This plant is not hardy in the UK. Keep it indoors over winter but it can go in the garden once danger of frost has passed.
  • In the wild (tropical climates) it will grow into a shrub which is about 2m tall.
  • Likes full sun.
  • If planting in the garden for the summer, try placing next to paths where the scent of the foliage will delight all who pass by!
  • Soil: well-drained, poor, dry soil, or John Innes No2 in a pot
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to August
  • Flower colour: pale lilac to white
  • Other Features: lemon-scented leaves are useful for making herb tea and pot pourri
