Anigozanthos pale yellow

Anigozanthos flavidus is a rather strange and fascinating house plant that is also known as the evergreen kangaroo paw. Why? Because it has tubular, curved and densely hairy flowers that look rather like the paws of a kangaroo! Native to Western Australia, this can be found on roadsides and in swampy areas within its home environment; also on river banks and in forests of Eucalyptus trees.

  • Here in the UK it is treated as a houseplant, although it can live out in the garden during the summer.
  • It likes bright rooms and can even tolerate a certain amount of direct sun.
  • Use free-draining compost as the roots should never stay soggy.
  • Water regularly, but sparingly.
  • Water less during the winter.
  • This is a clump-forming perennial which can eventually grow more than 2m high.
  • The leaves are strap-shaped and the stems are erect and wiry.
  • It can be pruned after flowering. Remove the entire flowering stem back to compost level once flowers are over.
  • The plant is approximately 35cm in height, including the pot.
  • Currently growing in a 14cm pot.
