Alocasia lauterbachiana, also known as Elephant Ears, is a tropical house plant here in the UK. It is grown and loved for its upright leaves which have a lush appearance. Ideal as a house plant, it does require protecting from frost and it looks great in a container.

  • Evergreen perennial which hails from Indonesia and New Guinea.
  • It has creeping underground rhizomes and trunk-like stems.
  • Lance-shaped leaves with scalloped margins.
  • The foliage is dark green on top and burgundy-purple underneath, with mottled stems.
  • This plant likes dappled shade in the wild, so in an indoor environment give it some indirect light.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight.
  • Water frequently but do not allow the plant to stand in water.
  • Certain parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten.
