Here's an interesting and unusual house mate. Adenium obesum is a house plant known as the desert rose. It is a cactus-like succulent which could be described as beautiful when flowering. During the season it can produce large and showy flowers in shades of pink, white or red that open in long succession all summer long. One of the world's most amazing plants, it makes a thick, fleshy trunk, swollen at the base, the spreading branches bearing dark green, thick, pointed leaves.

  • Generally evergreen, but it can lose its foliage during a drought or during cold spells.
  • This unusual plant grows up to 3m tall in the wilds of the south Sahara. It also lives in Africa and Arabia.
  • The leaves are arranged spirally and have a leathery texture.
  • Well adapted to the vagaries of the desert with hot temperatures during the day and chilly at night.
  • It produces beautiful, tubular flowers which are carmine through to a whitish blush.
  • The flowers open in long succession all summer long, given the right conditions.
  • The fleshy trunk of this plant is swollen at the base.
  • Beware of the sap in roots and stems, it is toxic.
  • Give Adenium obesum a bright, sunny spot and ensure temperatures do not fall below 10 deg C (50 degF).
  • Treat in a similar way to a cactus. Water regularly but allow the compost to dry in between waterings.
  • Highly unusual plant
  • These are highly intriguing specimens with thick trunks.
  • Sold in a 20cm pot.
  • Total height is approximately 30cm
